Final Day Prospects At Egmont Meeting
Following on the heavy rain during the week conditions may be somewhat changed at Hawera today for the concluding day of the Egmont winter meeting, and the track is likely to be heavy, though there has been a drying wind, Fields throughout the day are of pleasing dimensions, though the big steeplechase has attracted only eight acceptors, whereas there were 12 starters last Saturday. Provision has been made for divisions in the Waihi Hack and the Borough Hack, but two scratchings in each would obviate the necessity of divisions. Political Boy will probably be selected to repeat his feat of two years ago by adding the Adamson Steeplechase to his Egmont Steeples success. Best of his opponents may be Kilmanagh, last year's winner, and Royal Scholar. With Peter's Choice a likely absentee, Foxland will be left at the head of the Manawapou Hurdles list. On his first-day form he may prove hard to beat, but Spiro and Glenfayle are capable of improvement and may be more prominent than they were in the Tangahoe Hurdles. Placegetters in the Mcßae Handicap are again engaged in the Davidson Handicap, over the same distance. Gildchase has gone up 81b, but some of the others will be meeting him on better terms. However, he appeared to win with something in hand, and if he lines up today he may be favourite. Should he be absent backers may declare for Atomic, Dunbar and Mister Beau. Kia Ora Katoa was unlucky in the sprint last Saturday and he may make amends in the Mokoia Handicap. The Franada-Bramerton bracket and Deprive, who fought out a fine finish, and Travel King may also be in the picture. Good winning form is held by Batley, Baffles Rex and Pan Walla in the Tonks Memorial Plate, and the clash between General Rule, Bonnie Fair, Gay Stitches and Pan Walla (if reserved) should provide a Atting finale for the meeting. The following may be fancied Manawapou Hurdles: Spiro, Foxland, Glenfayle. Short Hack Handicap: Bonnie Fair, Bian Rouge, Exemplary. Mokoia Handicap: Kia Ora Katoa, Deprive, Bramerton bracket. Waihi Handicap: First division, Sir Royal, Brookland. Second division, Olympia, Capitalist. Tonks Memorial Hack Plate: Batley, Baffles Rex, Pan Walla. Adamson Steeplechase: Political Boy, Kilmanagh, Royal Scholar. Davidson Handicap: Dunbar, Atomic, Gildchase (or Mister Beau). Borough Hack Handicap: First division, General Rule, Pan Walla. Second division, Gay Stitches, Bonnie Fair. Following are the acceptors:—
