FORGED TOTALISATOR TICKETS FRAUD
TWO MEN FOUND CUILTt, A THIRD ACQUITTED (P.A.) Auckland, May 7. Two men were found guilty and a third was acquitted by a jury on a number of charges alleging betting frauds at the Ellerslie Racecourse by means of forged totalisator tickets. The trial, at which the Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O'Leary) presided, began on Wednesday and the jury returned its verdict after a retirement of just over four hours to consider 113 charges of forgery, uttering, theft and conspiracy to defraud. Neville Wolfe, aged 30, clerk was found guilty of 37 charges of forgery, 35 of uttering, 21 of theft and two of conspiracy, between November 1947 and Marcli. 1948. He was found not guilty on the remaining 18 charges of conspiracy. John Proctor Savage, aged 27, labourer, was found guilty on two charges of forgery, two of uttering, two of theft and two of eonspiracy on Marcli 27. He was acquitted on the remaining 32 charges of forgery. 32 ot uttering, 17 of theft and 18 of conspiracy. » Douglas Gordon, machine operator, was found not guilty on all six charges of forgery, six of uttering, four of theft and four of conspiracy, and he was discharged. Wolfe and Savage were remanded to appear for sentence on Tuesday.
