NO RESTRICTION ON MAORIS IN AUSTRALIA MINISTER’S NEW VIEW
Recd. 9.55 p.m. Canberra, May 6. No restrictions of any kind will be placed by the Australian Government upon the entry into Australia of Maoris. This undertaking has been communicated to the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) by the Immigration Minister (Mr. Ca'well). The question was raised recently in Parliament here, when Mr. Calwell said Maoris would be treated in the same way as other Polynesians. This produced instant reaction from New Zealand, whose representatives complained about such discrimination. It is understood Mr. Ca'well, in his communication to Mr. Fraser, has amended his previously expressed viewpoint, and to have stated that Maoris can enter Australia on the same tooting as other New Zealanders.
