DENSE CLOUDS OF SMOKE STILL ISSUING FROM NGAURUHOE
Dense clouds of black smoke were still issuing from the crater of Mount Ngauruhoe yesterday, and it was estimated that the billowing smoke was rising to a height of from 3000 to 4000 feet. The mountain has been in constant eruption since Friday night and in addition to the smoke, fiery rocks have been hurtled Into the air. Maor Holmes, commandant of the Waioupru Military Camp, stated yesterday that no earth tremors had been felt in the area nor could any noise from the erupting mountain be heard at the camp, which is only 20 miles distant in a straight line. On Friday the mountain was covered with »uow, but there is not a vestige of it to be seen now. Those who have seen the mountain at night describe it as an impressive sight as the smoke becomes red tinted. Dust irom the volcano is reported to be falling in the Taupo area and on the Tongariro Range. The New Zealand Government volcanologist, Mr. J. H. Healy, accompanied by a member of the staff ot the Geological Survey, is visiting the area.
