Ngauruhoe Throwing Out Much Ash

EXPERT CIRCLES THE CRATER, FINDS IT LARGER (P.A.) Auckland, May 3. Explosions in the crater of Mount Ngauruhoe are believed to have enlarged considerably the vent from which the mountain had been pouring out an almost continuous steam and ash column since Friday evening. The Government volcanologist at Rotorua (Mr. J. Healy) formed this opinion fter a flight over the crater today. It appeared, he said, that since the crater was inspected yesterday the steam vent had grown several times its size, and now occupied a much greater area of the western corner of the crater than before. While the aircraft’ circled the mountain today regular explosive emissions of ash continued. Mr. Healy was flown past the western crater rim and had a view of the vent, in which he could see no sign of lava. Although calculations must necessarily ue only approximate, it has been estimated that Ngauruhoe Is blowing out ash at the rate ot at least 100 tons a minute. The latest report tonight indicates that explosions are less severe.
