AWAPUNI GOLD CUP TODAY AT MANAWATU MEETING

Concluding Day Has Attracted Many Interesting Fields

V> ith the Awapuni Gold Cup as a weight-for-age feature over ten furlongs and the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes as a test of juvenile stamina over seven furlongs, the Manawatu Racing Club has an attractive card today for the concluding day of the autumn meeting at Awapuni. Supporting these two races are the Tamatete Handicap, run over a mile and a-quarter, and the Longburn Handicap, a seven-furlong sprint, with the usual large hack fields in

the minor events. Since the opening day of the meeting last Saturday there has been a fair amount of rain in the Manawatu district, and the track appears certain to be a little easier, though it should still be fast. Several fresh horses are engaged, but in-the main first-day form will influence backers. Feature event on the autumn meeting for some thirty years, save for a break during World War 11, the Awapuni Gold Cup has attracted an acceptance of six, including last year’s winner, Langue d’Or, who is also in the Tamatete Handicap but may start in the weight-for-age event. On autumn form King's Ransom and Robin’s Reward are entitled to dispute favouritism, but it would not be surprising to find Square Dink extending them, as this Dink gelding looks like turning out extra good. Over a distance a quarter of a mile shorter than the King George Handicap, the Tamatete Handicap looks like being run at a solid pace all the way, especially as last pacemaker, Theiolyn, is again engaged. With Selas a winner at Ellerslie, Gay Stroller a Manawatu Cup winner, Dark Arrow,, Atomic, Cressida Sun Burn and Morotai recent winners, and several improving handicappers, fancies may take a wide range. Selas, Atomic and Morotai may be fancied by investors. There is plenty of recent form as a guide in the Longburn Handicap, and with the large field the barrier draw is certain to be valuable for smart beginners. With anything like a decent run Sea Fury, The Pagan, and Mercian Lad should be prominent. A larger field than usual will line up for the Sires’ Produce Stakes, the top-ranking two-year-olds being absentees. Probably the best form is to the credit of Vadoz, Buchanan and Air Belle.

Strong fields are engaged in the hack events, and with some newcomers among the hurdlers the opening event should be more interesting than was the case last Saturday. Horses likely to command support- include the following:—

Kairere Hurdles.—Gyration, MasterGuard, Craven. Trial Plate.—Gratuity, Gay Fellow, Master Chat. Awapuni Gold Cup.—Square Dink, King's Ransom, Robin's Reward.
