WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD SUPPORTS DR. BEEBY’S APPOINTMENT

“I was disappointed at (he attitude adopted by some boards in regard to the appointment of the Director of Education (Dr. C. E. Beeby) as assistant Director-General of the U.N.E.5.C.0,” (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), said the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board (Mr. W. B. Tennent Palmerston North), at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. Mr. Tennent said that U.N.E.S.C.O. at the present time was a vital factor in the interests of peace. Millions of children in Europe had suffered because of war and its aftermath, and

unless something was done to restore order in the educational field the future would be discouraging. While not agreeing with everything Dr. Beeby had done in the educational field, he said he supported the appointment. He moved that the board congratulates Dr. Beeby on his appointment and congratulates Mr. A. F. McMurtrie on being chosen acting Director of Education.

In seconding the motion Mr. E. R. Hodge said there had been a lot ol criticism about the new education, and he did not think all the blame could be laid on the shoulders ol Dr. Beeby. He said Mr. McMurtrie was a former senior inspector of schools of the Wanganui Education Board. Other former senior inspectors under the board who had become Directors of Education in New Zealand were Messrs T. B. Strong and N. T. Lambourne. Mr. Tennent’s motion was carried.
