ALARM EXPRESSED AT RAPID SPREAD OF RAGWORT
A decision to request county councils concerned to enforce the provisions of the Noxious Weeds Act in their respective areas, was reached at the monthly meeting of Federated Farmers, Wanganui Provincial district, yesterday.
The decision followed a discussion in which Mr. W. S. Glenn said the rapid spread of ragwort in the district was an evil portent for the future prosperity of farming if it was not checked immediately. He said that it was not fair for any farmer to neglect his responsibilities in the matter, The speaker viewed with alarm the spread of the weed, which had caused havoc in other parts of the country. Mr. Glenn cited cases where he saw 100 sheep having died because of ragwort. It was far more serious for the dairy farmer, as he lacked sheep to clear his land.
The chairman, Mr. H. J. Donnelly (Raetihi) said land in the Waimarino which for 10 years had been infested with ragwort, was now clean. Mr. Glenn said it did not apply so much to the high country. “I am concerned with the spread of ragwort,” said Mr. A. R. Laird, "and I support the remarks of Mr. Glenn.” Mr. Donnelly: We could ask the county councils in the areas concerned to give the matter their close attention.
