HUNTERVILLE NEWS

RABBIT BOARD (0.C.) Hunterville, Jan. 25. A meeting of the Hunterville Rabbit Board was held last week. Those present were Messrs L., Weston (chairman), G. Simpson, L. Laird and Mr. August (Government stock inspector). Leave of absence was granted to Mr. A. McDonald. The board decided to appoint a second rabbit inspector, and that a penalty of 10 per cent, on all unpaid rates be levied after February 14. Mr. Weston, who attended a Rabbit Board conference held at Te Awamutu, reported on the’ conference. Mr. Weston stated that a Rabbit destruction Council had been set up, having representatives ' from the North Island, the South Island, and three members to be appointed by the Government. The council would have the power to dictate what policy respective local Rabbit Boards had to follow. The nominees to the council had affirmed their intention of being firm in the eradication cf rabbits. The council could, if boards were not making sufficient progress towards the.destruction of the pest, order Rabbit Boards to adopt a “killer” policy, which would result in a heavy rise in rates.

The work done by the Hunterville board’s inspector during the past year had been most gratifying, said Mr. Weston, and the board felt confident that with the continued cooperation of farmers the board’s policy would prove to be successful in the campaign against the rabbit nuisance. EMPIRE SHOOT Local residents have read the announcement that cadets from the Marton District High School have won the Earl Roberts Trophy (or rifle shooting. Congratulations, Marton High School. An interesting point is that two of the lads, Baden and Neville Green, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. Green, of Hunterville, participated in the shoot. The instructor, Warrant Officer D. Abel, is also from Hnuterville. PERSONAL Miss P. Jenkins, of Marton, is spending a few days in Hunterville. She is the guest of Mrs W. Parkes, Onga Road.
