Infantile Paralysis “Holiday” For Council Of Amateur Sport

The Wanganui Council of Amateur Sport has grown since its inception in December, 1944. At present its membership includes 16 sports associations, each represented by a delegate at meetings. Normally about this time the council has a busy time as it runs most of the activities of "High Jinks,” the regular February carnival. This has been cancelled this year on account of the poliomyelitis epidemic. Art union tickets are being sold, however, and this is being done as usual for the Tourist and Publicity Committee by the Amateur Council. “The Wanganui Council was formed to provide cohesion and co-opera-tion between the amateur sports bodies of the city. It has no connection with the National Council of Sport, which controls both profes sional and amateur sport in New Zealand,” stated the secretary and prime mover in the formation of the council, Mr. Eric Lind. “The objects of the council are to foster, encourage and supprt all forms of sport and athletic games, physical welfare, culture and development, and to promote sports carnivals. It is contrary to trie constitution to interfere with the internal management of any of the member associations, but it provides an avenue of co-operation between sports, so that joint activities ana financial arrangements may be organised. “It is to be hoped that member associations have not joined for the sake of the money they might get out of their membership," said Mr. Lind. He emphasised the point that this year there would be no “bonus” from the February activities, and members would have to give before they could receive help.

Present executive officers of the council are: Patron, Mr. C. Healey: nresident, Mr. D. O. Buck (who was the first president of the council); vice-president, Mr. G. Benson; secre-tary-treasurer, Mr. E. Lind (who was the first secretary in 1944).
