Almost the whole of Mr. Samuel Courtauids' fortune of £1,030,126 was 1." t to his daughter, Mrs Sydney ’rir’-’beth Bugler, wife of Mr. R. A. Butler, who is one of the leading members of the Conservative Party and a former Minister of Education. Mr. Courtauld left Mr. Butler a freehold property in Gloucestershire
and his share in a farming business carried on with Viscount Lee of Fareham, who died last July. Mrs. Butler is as keen a politician as her husband, and it was she who first suggested he should enter politics. He was elected for Saffron Walden three years after they were married. Samuel Courtauld was the second son of Sydney Courtauld, of Bucking Place, Braintree, and was educated at Rugby School. From 1927 to 1934. and from 1935 to 1937 was a Trustee of the Tate Gallery. He was also a Trustee of the National Gallery. He was chairman of directors of Courtauids Ltd.
