Britain's Share Under The Marshall Aid Plan
ESTIMATE FOR FIRST FIFTEEN MONTHS OF OPERATION Beceived 10.10 p.m. \ NEW YORK, Jan. 14 Britain would receive aid worth about 2,000,000,000 dollars under tentative estimates prepared by the State Department for the first 15 months’ operation of the Marshall Plan, says the “New York Times’’ Washington correspondent. Britain stands at the top of the list with France second and Italy third. .
Sixty to 80 per cent, of the value of the aid to Britain would be in the form of grants and the remainder in loans. The State Department has divided the 16 Marshall Plan countries into four categories in accordance with tentative estimates of their ability to pay. Greece and Austria would receive outright grants Switzerland, Portugal, and Turkey would be expected to pay cash for goods and services supplied. Sweden. Norway, and Ireland would receive loans. Britain, France. Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium. Luxembourg, Denmark. and Iceland would receive loans for some purchases and grants for others.
