MR. S. N. ZIMAN DIES AFTER FALL ON STAIRS NEAR LONDON

' (N.Z.P.A.—Special Correspondent.) London, Nov. 21. i The death occurred early this 'morning, following an accident at his home near Pinner last evening, of Mr. Solomon Netheim Zirnan, wellknown in scholastic and sporting circles in Auckland. Mr. Ziman slipped when descending a stairway at his home and suffered abrasions and contusions, but it was not at first thought that his injuries were serious. Later, however, he complained of feeling unwell and was taken to hospital, where it was found that he had developed haemorrhage of the brain. He became unconscious and did not recover. Since November of last year Mr. Ziman had filled the position of rehabilitation officer at New Zealand House, where he did outstanding work in dealing with the requirements of returned servicemen bursary holders in the United Kingdom. He was official representative in Britain of the University of NewZealand.

Born in Wellington in 1886. Mr. Ziman was educated at Auckland Grammar School, Auckland University College, graduating M.Sc., and, as a Rhodes Scholar, gained his M.A. (Oxon.) at Balliol College, and M.A. (Cantab.) at Gonville and Caius College. He represented Auckland University at Rugby, hockey and running, and Balliol at football and rowing. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1911 'and rose to officiating secretary to the Government of Bombay in 1923. During World War I. he served with the 35th Scinde Horse, and as a staff captain with the Bannu Moveable Column, North-West Fron-tier,l9l6-19. He retired on a pension in 1925. He was a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, president of the Hamilton Operatic Society, Commissioner of the Boy Scouts, Waikato district, and a member of the South Auckland Mortgage Adjustment Commission. Mr. Ziman was also prominently associated with Farmers’ Union affairs in the Waikato and served on a number of commissions. His active interest in amateur dramatics stimulated the movement for some years in Hamilton and Cambridge.
