Wanganui Players Selected For Country Team
The Country cricket team to play Town at the Basin Reserve on December 5 and 6 is as follows:
J. A. Ongiey (captain), C. McVicar, W. Rainbird, R. Adcock (Manawatu), T. P. Reaney (Hawke’s Bay), H. B. Cave, D. D. Beard, E. K. Hunt, (Wanganui), N. Autridge (Taranaki), G. Rowe (Wairarapa), G. Botting (Nelson), twelfth man, F. Collis (Manawatu).
Ongiey. McVicar, Cave, Hunt, and Reaney played for Country last season, and A’utridge played in 1945. Rowe and Ongiey have represented New Zealand, while Rainbird. Rowe, and Ongiey 1 ' have all played for Wellington.'Rowe was a member of the Ne.w Zealand team which opposed the Australians on their 1946 tour. Beard was selected to represent Wellington last season, but was unable to play as he had a burnt hand. The team also has a quartette of Plunket Shield players in Ongiey, Cave, Rainbird, and Rowe. Adcock and Hunt, are young cricketers. Adcock was a member of the Manawatu team which figured in the sensational “walk-off" during a Hawke Cup match against Hawke's Bay at Napier Park last season. Hunt has been Wanganui’s leading club and representsfive batsmen for some seasons and will nrobably open Country’s innings with McVicar. Beard. Cave, and Autridge are medium pace bowlers, Reaney bowls medium swingers. Adcock delivers off spinners. The Nelson cricketer. Botting. is wicket-keeper.
