CARELESS CYCLE PARKING IN CITY MATTER FOR CONCERN

"Can anything be done to prevent, bicycles being placed on footpaths? they are becoming a real menace,” said Mr. W. D. Young at last night's meeting of the Wanganui Chamber ot Commerce. "When it is getting dusk one runs the risk of gashing one’s leg on a pedal " The secretary (Mr. A. R. Donaldson) said the Wanganui City Council had instructed its inspectors to stop the parking of bicycles on footpaths. Mr R. G. Taiboys said that the Automobile Association (Wanganui) had given the council 25 holders for cycles for trial. Each would hold one cycle and was merely a loop of iron let into the kerb.

"You probably read in the paper* recently that Wanganui 4*_-s more bicycles per head of popu.atlon than Christchurch," said the president, Mr S. R. McCallum. "You only have to be at the main intersections at midday and five o'clock to see the number of cycles." A member: There will be a lot more now that the tram fares have been increased.

A member alleged that the trouble was due to the careless parking of bicycles. Another member said that Wanganui was fortunate in having a large parking place for bicycles which other centres did not possess. “Could the inspectors not be given authority to impound bicycles that are left lying on the footpaths?” said Mr. S. J. Sullivan

It was decided to write to the Wanganui City Council urging that action should be taken to remove the nuisance.
