Wanganui Players Play Well in North Island’s Winning Rugby Side
(P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 5. In one of the brightest games seen in Wellington this season, North Island beat South Island, 24-5, on Saturday in the first fixture of its kind among the elit e of footballers drawn from the railways service. Better opportunism was mainly responsible for the North’s success. Conditions were ideal and a crowd of 4000 was a good one for the end of the season. The display of Rugby was all the more creditable when it is considered that Rugby among railwaymen throughout New Zealand was placed on an organised competitive basl s f° r the first time this year. The North owed much to the leadership of B. L. McCashin (Horowhenua), hooker and captain, G. Brew, who has represented Manawatu, L. ■Miller, the speedy Wanganui centre 'three-quarters, and C. Ward. Welllng- | ton wing three-quarters, while others in P. Tamati, half-back, M. Hihira, i five-eighths, both of Wanganui, revealed plenty of talent. i The South Island side was led by W. McHugh, the experienced Canterbury representative, and included M. Wilson 'centre), R. Bennett (half) and R. C. Woodham (back) players who have represented Canterbury, two Otago forwards in A. E. Hillyer and T. Wallace, and others who have appeared in inter-provincial Rugby.
Mott, Miller, Potter and Hihira each scored two tries for the North. Clifford converted three and kicked two penalty goals. McNickel scored for the South, Gorton converting.
