MANY ENTRIES RECEIVED FOR AMBULANCE COMPETITIONS NEXT WEEK

This week two officers ot the Marton Ambulance Division journeyed to Wanganui for the purpose of meeting the Wanganui officers to finalise arrangements for the district competitions which are this year being held on Marton Park, on Sunday, October 12. Entries, which closed on Tuesday evening, reveal that there will be a large number of visiting ambulance men and women in Marton on that day. For the various trophies the following number of teams have entered: Tawse Memorial Bowl (nurses), 4; Central Nursing Division Challenge Cup, 3; Wanganui Old Members' Shield. 5; Quirk Cup, 5; Crawford Cup. 5; Richard Wakely Memorial Consolation Cup, 5. The last four are for ambulance men. The visiting teams and officials will irrive at 11.15 and will be welcomed by the patron of the Marton Brigade, (he Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) after which luncheon will be served in headquarters, “Victory Hall." At approximately- 12.30 p.m. the entire brigade will march to Marton Park for the competitions, which will commence st 1 p.m. The grounds will be

marked out with flags and the various tests wilb-be easily been by the public. Visiting doctors and district ollicers will act as judges, and in tne case of the drill and transport marks, the judge wll be one of the visiting district officers. The Marton Municipal Band, under the direction of Mr. R. D. Maloney, will render a programme of music, and later will head the parade back to headquarters. The various trophies will appear next week in a Broadway window. The nursing cadets of the Marton Brigade will not be holding their competitions with other cadet divisions until the Labour Day week-end. Their tests will be held in Wanganui, when there will be two entries from the local Nursing Cadets. COUNTY ENGINEER TO BE ENTERTAINED. Arrangements for a special presentation and evening for Mr S. A. R. Mair, who retired from the position of engineer to the Rangitikei County Council at the end of last month, were made at a meeting of the council on Thursday. Mr. Mair has served 47 years on the council staff. The function is to take place in the Lounge Tearooms, Marton, on Wednesday, November 5, and ratepayers and the general public are being invited to attend. RANGITIKEI HOCKEY BALL. Preparations are well in hand for the annual Rangitikei Hockey Association’s ball to be held in the Bulls Town Hall on Tuesday night. The association has had a very successful season and ended on a triumphal note when the representative team won the Holden Cup at the Dominion tournament last month. This cup will be presented, as well as numerous other trophies, won by various teams throughout the season. • With Jack Maine’s band supplying the music and “extras’ by the Ohakea Air Force orchestra, it should be a gala night in Bulls on Tuesday. Streamers, two lucky Gay Gordons and a special supper are just a few of the many attractions being provided. Dress is optional. Special buses arc leaving Marton, Hunterville, Feilding, Palmerston North and Rata. The ball should be a fitting culmination to one of the best hockey seasons on record “MISS NEW ZEALAND” QUEST Only three days remain before the closing date of the Rangitikei campaign recently launched to support the candidature of Miss Isobel Cameron in the “Miss New Zealand” quest. Billens, editor of the “Manawatu Daily Times,” Palmerston North, will be the speaker at the monthly meeting of the St. Andrew’s Men’s Club on Wednesday evening. Members of the club will be paying a visit to the Wanganui Men s Fellowship Club early this month. Guest evening will be held in November, when it is hoped the speaker will be Mr. H. Somerset, of Feilding. This is the eighth annual occasion of this kind, and it is estimated that now over 15 millions of Christians share in this act of worship dnd fellowship. All members of the Church are urged to attend and thus make their contribution to the sense of unity of all Christians symbolised by this simultaneous observance.
