Passing of Valueless Cheques Has Sequel In Court

The passing of two valueless cheques led to the appearance in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday, of Robert John Boyd, labourer, aged 42. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. One charge alleged that, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Bruce W. P. Burton an overcoat valued at £8 4s 3d, by falsely representing that a cheque was good and valid, and the other charge alleged that accused obtained clothing valued at £1 Ils 9d and £5 7s 9d by the same means.

“The trouble about giving you another chance is that your list of previous convictions is so bad otherwise,” remarked Mr. J, H. Salmon, S.M. “I cannot overlook these previous cases.”

On one charge accused was sentenced to three months’ gaol, on the other he was convicted and discharged.
