“BLACK” BAN ON HOTELS
WESTCOASTERS TURN TO MILK AND ICE CREAM (P.A.) Greymouth, Oct. 3. An increase in the consumption of ice creams and milk shakes at Greymouth does not indicate that the district is experiencing a heat wave. To the contrary, temperatures are below average. It merely reflects the determination of good unionists to show that they are fully behind the boycott on beer which has been imposed by the West Coast Trades Council to fight the increase of Id a glass which was imposed by hotelkeepers on Wednesday to bring charges here into line with those elsewhere in the Dominion. Small posters, "Sevenpenny beer is black," greet Greymouth people from walls and posts today as the latest move in a war of nerves being conducted by the Trades Council, which has resulted in a tremendous drop in hotel patronage since Wednesday. Even yesterday, when the streets were thronged with workers in town for the O’Brien funeral, hotels were comparatively deserted, apart from one of 22 in Greymouth which is not abiding by the decision of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association to increase the price.
