Civic Reception to Delegates at Junior Chamber Convention

More than 200 delegates from all parts of New Zealand, many of them accompanied by their wives, are attending the fourth annual convention of the New Zealand Junior Chamber of Commerce, which opened in Wanganui yesterday and will be continued today. The Dominion president, Mr. P. B. Watts (Canterbury), is presiding, and delegates attending the convention include Mr R. M. Dale (Wellington), assistant commercial secretary to th G High Commissioner for Canada in New Zealand, and Mr. A. E. Tarrant, one of the two world vice-presidents of the Junior Chamber International.

Extending a civic welcome when the convention opened yesterday afternoon, the Mayor of Wanganui, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., said that delegate* had from all parts of New Zealand for the purpose of discussing important, questions concerning the welfare of junior chambers and their members. “This, so to speak, is your annual parliament,’’ the Mayor added. “You ar e to be congratulated upon the steady growth and expansion of membership and also much effective community work. T am happy to say, that our Wanganui Junior Chamber is contributing much to the general welfare of our city.

“In vour deliberations I feel sure you will be actuated by the desire to promote and develop all those matters which in the Ion? run will not only contribute immensely to the happiness and welfare of your own members, but also to the general good of the people whose lives you touch throughout New Zealand. In short, you cart and will contribute much to the sum total of human happiness. As long as your chief desire is the transcendent motive ( and I am sure it. Is) to give service to the people whom you contact in your business and othe” relationships, you will be an effective force in the society of your fellow men and women. “Mav I conclude on this note that I am sure all your proceedings and debates will be characterised bv a very high standard of intelligence, harmonv and goodwill, and your convention* will be fraught with much lasting good, and that vour stay In ou” citv will be markedly hapny. and that vou will always have most Peasant memories of your fourth annual convention.’’ said the Mayor. The president of the Wanganui Junior Chamber. Mr. D L. Sherriff. also extended a worm welcome to th? visitors and said that it was a privilege to entertain delocates and their wives. The convention would no? have been possible financially however. without the assistance of Wanganui citizens. “Literally, the people of Wanganui have given Uq this, convention which Wn hand on to you, Mr. Sherriff added.

Mr. A, C Halligan (Dunedin), replying on behalf ot visiting delegates, said the welcome was very much appreciated. ’’Wanganui is doing a very good job for us and we feel thev have put on an excellent show already,” he added.

Two overseas delegates are attending the convention, but several messages ot greeting were read from junior chambers in other parts of the world.

The convention will be continued today. Gatherings arranged for the week-end include an undenominational church sendee in the City Council Chambers at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow and a trip up the Wanganui River later in th P morning to Kaiwhaiki.
