RUSSIA REFUSES U. S. PERMISSION TO INSPECT EMBASSY
Recd. 7 p.m. Washington, Sept. 30. Russia has refused permission for the Assistant Secretary of State (Mr. John Purifoy) and members of the Senate Appropriations Committee to enter Russia next month for an inspection of the United States Embassy in Moscow. Russia banned the entire group on the ground that it did not consider itself a suitable subject for senatorial Investigation. The United States Ambasador in Moscow (Lieutenant-Gen-eral Walter Bedell-Smith) made a second request emphasising that senators would examine only the United States Embassy operations, but this too, was refused. The committee leaves the next week to inspect areas in Europe and the Middle East where the United States spending is either in progress or contemplated.
