WANGANUI CRICKET SEASON TO OPEN ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18

A decision to open the 1947-48 Wanganui cricket season on Saturday, October 18, was reached at a meeting of the management committee of the Wanganui Cricket Association last night. It was stated that grounds would be available for club practices a week earlier. Entries for competition play close on October 6. Competition point s will be the same as last season, namely, five for an outright win, three for a win on the first innings, two for a draw, one for a first innings loss, and none for an outright loss. Hours of play are also the same, 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.. the 15-minute tea adjournment being taken at 3.45 p.m. It was reported that the Wanganui City Council had granted the use o£ Cook's Gardens, Victoria Park and Peat Park for the season. On the motion of Mr D. MeCawe, seconded by Mr. E. K. Hunt, it was decided to increase the charge for the use of Cook's Gardens on Sundays for cricket matches from fl Is to £1 10s. The charge for the use of Victoria Park was increased from 10s 6d to £1 Is. Charges have not been increased for affiliated clubs. A letter was received from the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council seeking co-operation in establishing the game among women in the city and district. On the letter being read delegates at the meeting considered that they had the task of. looking after the primary schools competition which was re-established last year. No action was taken.

An application from the Railways Cricket Club for the use of Cook’s Gardens on Sunday, December 7, for their annual match with Wellington Railway for the Hayhow Cup was granted. Speaking for the Wanganui Umpires’ Association, Mr. C. E. Anderson said the association hoped to have regular reports from team captains regarding the standard of umpiring in their respective matches. He said the reports would be a valuable guide in the appointment of umpires for representative fixtures and also for the nominations they intended to make for the two Town v. Country fixtures. The following committees were appointed:—Fixtures: Mr. J. Caradus (senior), in association with a member to be appointed by the junior advisory board. Grounds: Messrs G. S. Powell and N. McDougall. Postponement of matches was left in the hands of the grounds committee. Materials: Mr. D. Deere. Recording secretary: Mr. J. H. Felts. Tl’e meeting was attended by Messrs G. S. Rowell (chairman). E. K. Hunt. I). McCawe. E. Neale. J. Mills, C. E. Anderson, D. Deere and J. Caradus.
