Britain and U.S.A. Support Argentina On Security Council
New York, Sept. 28.
The United States and Britain have decided to support Argentina's candidacy fqr a place on the Security Council, says the "New York Times” United Nations correspondent. Originally, United States support was to have gone to Cuba or Uruguay, for one of three seats —Australia, Poland or BrazZ—which will become vacant on January 1. The switch was made, however, in accordance with Washington's policy of accepting a Latin-American choice for United Nations posts tacitly allotted to that block. British support for Argentina was influenced by the same reasoning, and strengthened by the United Kingdom's reliance on beef shipments from Argentina. Latin-American support for Argen tina became definite on Thursday and surprised many delegations from outside the Western Hemisphere, Reliable sources said the Latin-American group was at first split on the issue, but the deciding factor was Brazil’s support for Argentina. ■
