WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Kaitoke Institute. A very happy time was .spent by members ana friends at the September meeting oi the Ka.toKe W.1., it being members day. After the usual business was over the meeting was taken by two members, Mrs. Cameron ana Mrs. Pritcaara and a very pleasant time was spent. Items were gi\ en by tne following artists: —Duet, Mrs. King and Miss Bristol; song, Mrs. Emmett, dance, Miss Nolieene Hawkins and recitat.on, Ray Cameron. A hearty vote of thanks and a nice cup oi tea brought the afternoon to a close. Competitions were as follows: —Kell cushion, Mrs. Mackey 1, Mrs. Walker 2, Mrs. McKernan and Mrs. Eowlei 3 (equal): brown cane, Mrs'. Service 1, Mrs. Campoeil 2, Mrs. Walker 3; three narcissi, Mrs. Hunt 1, Mrs. Garner 2, Mrs. bcott 3; three poppies, Mrs. McKernan 1, Mrs. Hunt 2, Mrs. Garner 3.

Kai Iwi Institute. — X very pleasant afternoon was spent at the 13th. birtnday of the Km Iwi institute. Miss McCullock and Mrs. E. Rountree welcomed the many visitors. The president, Mrs. Mcnenzie, after dealing with formal business introduced four new members from the paparangi district. Mrs. Smith arranged a very interesting competition winch was won by Mrs. Rountree. Songs were sung by Miss K. Ross. Mesdames Bellringer, raleman and williams. Tne birthuay cake was made by Mix. Morrison an., iced by Mrs. J. Rountree. The candles were lit and blown out by Mrs. Coates and the cake cut by Mrs. J. Brownl.e, who wished the institute many more happy years. Competition results were: Sponge, Mrs. E. Rountree 1, Mrs. Morrison 2, Mrs. j. Rountree 3; bowl oi polyanthus, Mrs. Morrison 1, Mrs. Smith 2, Mrs. J. Brownlie 3; vase of daffodils, Mrs. Morrison 1, Mrs. J. Rountree 2; Mrs. E. Rountree 3.

Ctiku Institute. There was a goon attendance at the September meeting of the Utiku Womens Institute, which was presided over by Mrs, G. N. Transom. All members'and visitors were wecomed, but the president who expressed her pleasure in being able to welcome two new members, Mrs. McClean and Mrs. E. C. Transom. Birthday greetings were extended to two members whose birthdays occurred during the month, each member receiving a spray ol flowers. Two delegates, Mrs. K. i ransom (reporting), and Mrs. J. Dcvlan (voting', were cnosen to attend the hall-yearly federation meet.ng in Oliakune in October, and alter this the nnance was given by Mrs. Becker (treasurer). Arrangements were made to hold the annual flower show on Hie last Saturday in September, and it was decided to adopt the same procedure as m previous years. The "Help Wanted corner yielded much information, particularly in regard to gardening h.nu and was much appreciated by all. Mrs. J. Moore gave a very good book review, taking as her subject "When We were toung and Gay ' and this wa followed by afternoon tea. An extremely interesting demonstration, which brought much applause was given by Miss Rena Aduis, who expla.ned various points in connection with the flower show schedule and also gave some useful hints on the decorative section. The results of the competitions were as follows: Christmas novelty, Mrs. Thurston 1; best jar of marmalade, Mrs. G. M. Iranson 1, Mrs. Loughnane 2, Mrs. Thurston 3; premier llower, Mrs. Becker. Next month's contention; will oe Hie prettiest covered coathanger (points) and a hospial box and, t.ie roll-call will be "A Little Known Animal." It was also decided to ask Mr. Ricard if lie would give one of his interesting talks on Samoa and Hie Islands. Hostesses will be Mrs. Henery and Mi’s. Brooke.
