WANGANUI RUGBY

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

"I did not know that myself, until to-nignt,” said Mr. J. Moye, chairman of the Management Committee of the Wanganui Rugby Union at the fortnightly meeting, held on Tuesday night, when it was brought to the notice of delegates that it is the accepted custom in inter-colege Rugby matches, in Wanganui at least, to play 30 minut e spells. This answered criticism by a section of the public after the recent school match on Spriggens Park. The match provided the best football of the day, but to the regret of spectators, was only of 30 minute spells. Many people considered that this was due to time being taken up by preceding junior representative and midget matches.

However, it is the accepted thing for the seccnuary schools to play 30 minute spells (instead of 40) even on their own grounds, and the Rugby Union made it clear that they had not limited the playing time of the Technical— Collegiate match in any way whatsoever. FIXTURES. The Horowhenua Union has confirmed by letter th e Saturday, September 13, for the senior representative match Wanganui v. Horowhenua to b e played at Levin. Advice was received that the Wairarapa Rugby Union has been unable to finalise the date for the senior representative game with Wanganui. The matter has been held over by them, but should they be able to make the trip the suggested dat e of August 9 would not be acceptable. The Wanganui and Manawatu third grade representative teams will play in the curtain-raiser to the senior representative match, Manawatu v. Taranaki at Palmerston North on August 9.

Permission was granted to the Marist club senior team to play Hutt Valley seniors on September 14 on Spriggents Park.

An inter-house Rugby match will be played on August 2, Wright Stephenson and Company having been granted permission to meet Abraham and Williams on Williams Park.

Two application’s for the use of Williams Park, one by the Wanganui Railways Club for July 27 and the other from Central Swimming Club for August 10, were granted. The Management Committee agreed to a match between the Wanganui and Palmerston North Referees’ Associations, to be played on th P Racecourse on August 3.

A letter was received from the Hastings High School Old Boys Rugby Club seeking an inter-club third grade fixture on September 6. The matter was deferred pending the receipt of more particulars from the club concerned. MAORI MATCHES.

The Maori Advisory Board (Wellington) has circulated all Rugby Unions in the area concerned, inviting nominations of Maori players for th P West Coast representative team. This side is scheduled to play the Northern representative Maoris on August 23 at Whangarei for the Prince of Wales Cup. North holds the trophy at present. As the date of this match would interfere with arrangements for the Tuera Shield match between Wanganui and Taranaki Maoris, the Taranaki Rugby Union has suggested a change of venu e for the latter game. They indicate that it would be more suitable to stage the match in Wanganui and set a tentative date of August 9.

The mate f or the Whenuaroa Shield will be plttyru between two Maori teams representing Wanganui and Wanganui Sub-unions at Taihape on Wednesday, July 30. A grant of £5 was made by th e Rugby Union towards defraying the travelling expenses of the Wanganui team.
