VALUABLE PRIZES FOR CHILLED BEEF AT SPRING SHOW
The City of Oxford (England) Master Butchers' Association has advised the secretary of the Wanganui A .and P. Association that it desires to donate a perpetual challenge cup valued at £lO 10s to encourage compet'tois to enter more than one exhibit in the New Zealand Chilled Beef Chamt ionship, which is held each year in conjunction with the spring show.
■The cup is tc be awarded for the ‘■best chiller type four steers” entered by an individual exhibitor. The judge will place the whole entry in order of merit, so that the exhibitor with the best four in order of merit will win the trophy. In a covering letter it is stated that this type of competition has been most popular for fat cattle classes m England for the past 30 years.
The trophies to be competed for in tile New Zealand Chilled Beef Championship now number seven. With the increase of prize money recently decided upon, and the special prizes to be awarded by the various breed societies of New Zealand, the value of the prize awards in this, "the premier beef championship of the Dominion,” makes it also the most valuable class in any A. and P. show in the Dominion. The seven trophies are valued at £llO 10s and are as follows :
judging on the hoof. Silver Challenge Cup presented by Mr. S. S. limbs of Wanganui, valued at £lO 10s. Judging on hooks at Imlay Works. Silver Challenge Cup presented by Messrs. S. J. and R. L. Timbs, of Wanganui, valued at £lO 10s. Judging at Smithfield, London. Silver Challenge Cup presented by Messrs. J. Williams and Co. Ltd., Wanganui, valued at £25.
Bleeder of sire of winner. Silvey.' challenge cud donated by an anonymous supporter, valued at £lO 10s. Supreme champion. Silver challenge cup presented by Wanganui Drapers’ Association, valued at £lO 10s. Butchers' Association Cup, for exIrbit most suitable for local meat trade, presented by Wanganui Master ■Butchers’ Assoc ation valued at £33. Oxforu Et tellers Association Cup, for best tout entries by one exhibitor, presented by the City of Oxford Master Butchers' Association valued at £lO 10s.
The cash prizes to be given by the Wanganui A. and P. Association totals £75 3s over the three sections, are as follows:—First £B, second £5, third £3, fourth £2 and £1 each for fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth placings.
The association also awards £3 3s to the exhibitor who scores the most points in the three sections of the competition. The prize money to be awarded by the various breed societies of New Zealand totals £42 made up as follows :
The Shorthorn Society of New Zealand donates a first prize of £4 4s and a second prize of £2 2s for the best steer sired by a bull registered in the herd book of the society.
The New Zealand Red Poll Cattle Breeders’ Association offers a first prize of £3 3s and a second prize of £2 2s for the best steer sired by a registered Red Poll bull, also a premium of £2l if the winner also wins the open championship on the hoof.
The New Zealand Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association donates a first prize of £5 5s and a second prize of £3 3s for the best steer sired by an Aberdeen-Angus bull. The New Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association donates £2 2s to be awarded to the entry highest placed in the competition which is sired by a Hereford bull. With the cash prizes of £75, special prizes £43 and trophies £llO the total value of the awards in the New Zealand Chilled Beef Championship is £228. The Wanganui A. and P. Association is proud of the support which has been given by the supporters of the association, the Breeders Associations, the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, and Freeman R. Jackson and Co. Ltd., and acknowledges its indebtedness to the exhibitors who, since the championship was initiated in 1934. have continued to give their splendid support. The valuable awards that are now available to competitors would not have been possible butt for the support given to the championship by the exhibitors, and it is earnestly hoped that the coming championship will eclipse all those previously held, as far as entries are concerned.
