“MOUNTAINS OF BEEF” AT STORTFORD LODGE

(P.A.) Hastings, July 23. Most interest at the Stortford Lodge sale to-day was taken in the offering of some extra heavy ox beef. Though little ox came forward, what there were offered were "mountains of beef,'’ one A.A. bullock in particular being bigger than anything seen in the yards for years. This bullock, which was estimated to hang up at about 14001bs, sold for £34 18s 6d. Three other extra heavy bullocks made £3O, £2B 18s 6d and £2B 13s 6d respectively. Other classes of beef also sold on a strong market, which was helped by the short yarding of 160- head. A consignment of A.A. cows and heifers averaged £l3 3s 6d and 33 Hereford cows averaged £ll 5s 6d. Heavy sold from £l2 Ils to £l3 Is, and prime from £lO 16s to £l2 3s 6d, with heavy heifers at £l4 Is to £l4 6s and prime at £l3 3s 6d to £l3 16s.

Though the rostrum was only halt full, buying strength was present, with the result that there was another well-sustained inquiry in accordance with the recent movement in the store cattle market. Buyers faced a short yarding of only 260 head, which included some good weaners. Values for weaner steers ranged from £6 10s to £7 10s, and for weaner heifers from £4 Is to £5. Empty heifers realised £lO 2s, rising two-year steers were sold at £9 5s to £lO 6s, and rising four-year steers at £l2 ss. Store sheep were in shorter supply than usual, with a yarding of only 3000 head. The market was again strong for all classes of sheep, and 2-th ewes in lamb to Southdown rams made 40s 9d to 44 s 2d, the latter price being paid for the heavier woolled cut. Other in-lamb 2-ths made 335, 4-ths 35s 4d. and young mixed age ewes 335. Wethers soid at 30s, good wether hoggets at 31s lOd to 33s 9d, and ewe hoggets at 31s lOd to 33s 9d, and ewe hcggets 34s 6d to 355. Some splendid quality wethers were included in the yarding of 1000 fat sheep, and the season's top price of 49s lOd was obtained for an extra heavy animal. Other heavy wethers were traded at 44s 4d to 46s 4d, prime at 39s lOd to 41s lOd, and unfinished 37 s Id to 38s 4d. Extra heavy ewes brought 36s 4d. prime 30s Id to 32s lOd, and unfinished 24s lOd to 28s lOd, with young Dowp cross ewes at 34s Id. Heavy hoggets made 37s Id to 38s. 4d. medium 30s lOd to 35s 7d, and light at 26s Id to 27s 7d.
