WANGANUI BOWLING CLUB REVIEWS ITS PAST SEASON
“The season was a most satisfactory one,” states the annual report of the Wanganui Bowling Club, to be presented at the annual meeting to be held on Saturday, July 26. 'Although the weather was <: Jd and damp it improved toward Christmas and thereafter the district had a long spell of dry, calm days and our greens were fast, and true. The thanks of members is due to the green superintendent, Mr. W. J, Stone, and our late '.reen-keeper. Mr. G. G. Mullions, for the care and attention given to the ■greens, resulting in playing conditions which won favourable comment from visitors from alf parts of the Dominion. At the conclusion of the season, Mr. Mullions left the employ of the club after a service extending over IS years. The committee has appointed Mr. M. F. Newham to fill the position.”
Club competition winners were:— Club fours (Moult Shield): E. H. Kilgour, A. S. Doust, W. Ward, W. Harris (skip). A Singles: J. B. Jack. B Singles: E. H. Lange. C Singles: J. C. Austin. A Pairs: W. R. G. Thomson and S. J. Goodey (skip). B Pairs: F. E. Williamson and J. E. Foster (skip). Gordon Pairs: R. J. McDonald and D. F. Mursell, M. O. Tremain and W. Harris.
Due to wet days and numerous inter-club games only three club tournaments were played during the year. The Labour Day tournament was interrupted by rain and the proceeds were donated to the Combined Servicemen’s Bowling Club. The tournament held on January 2 was won by F. Johnston, G. H. White, D. J. B. Walker (skip) and that on January 25 by A. A. Hendry, J. A. Scott. R. J. McDonald and E. J. Paton (skip). The club took part in all centre competitions and J. B. Jack won the title of champion of champions singles while W. R. G. Thomson with S. J. Goodey as skip were the champion of champions pairs. "With the close of the war the club resumed its long established social games with the Marton Club by playing hdme-and-away games. Visits were also paid to Waverley and Feilding, these clubs returning the visits later in the season.
“The fortieth annual games for the Duthie Cup were played on the Wanganui green against Wellington when Wellington were successful. Wanganui was represented by J. A. Aylmer, A. Crawford, J. McFarlane, A. P. London (skip); F. Treloar, O. Hales, W. J. Stone, S. J. Goodey (skip). “Despite the careful management of the funds by our honorary treasurer, Mr. J. A. Gilmour, the year's working show's a small deficit. In view of the ever increasing cost of materials and maintenance the committee is of opinion that measures must be taken to increase the income of the club and with this object in view asks your favourable consideration of the proposal contained in the notice of motion which is appended to lis report.”
