THEFT OF CIGARETTES FROM SHIP’S CARGO ADMITTED BY SEAMEN

(P Al l Wellington, July 16 In the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., John Carmack .a seaman, aged 20, and Albert Erington, a seaman, aged 32, members of the crew of the steamer Samlamu, were charged with stealing 27,000 cigarettes, valued at £lOO, the property of the Port Line. Detective Ritchie stated that last Saturday morning he went to the railwav station, where he saw the accused, who answered to the description of two men reported to have taken five suitcases from the left luggage office. When he asked the accused whether he could examine the suitcases the men dropped them and ran away. On opening them, he found the cigarettes. Inquiries showed that a number of cigarettes had been pillaged from the steamer Samlamu. The two accused were subsequently interviewed and admitted having taken the cigarettes from No. 2 hold, intending to sell them. In statements produced, it was stated that the cigarettes were to be sold for £3 10s per thousand. Both accused pleaded guilty and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. __
