LIMITED SUPPLIES OF MOTOR TYRES

(P.A.I Pari.ament Bldgs., July 16. In the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr. Nqrdmeyer, replying to questions by Mr. A. S. Sutherland (Opp., Hauraki), Mr. A. C. Baxter (Govt., Raglan), concerning motor tyres, said the supply of truck tyres (many sizes of which were no longer rationed) was relatively good, with the exception of two sizes. The supply of certain car tyres was improving but not yet to the extent to justify their removal thorn rationing, although most priority applications could be met. Supplies qf other car sizes, however, were insufficient to meet priorities, and while advices of forward supply were reassuring actual shipments did not yet warrant the revocation of ratining. The Minister said the supply of tyres for private motorists depended solely upon the availability of sufficient stocks to allow the removal of rationing. Both the Government and the tyre importers were making efforts to speed up deliveries from overseas. It should be remembered, however, that while much greater supplies of rubber were now available some other materials, such as steel beading and cotton cord fabric, were not yet in full supply. This factor, together with the persistent labour fhortage overseas, limited the availability of supplies in New Zealand.
