DRAMA OF THE SKY
TOTAL ECLIPSE OF SUNON MAY' 24 On May 20, a total eclipse of the sun will take place in South America and across the South Atlantic. Astronomers from many parts of the world are journeying to South //-.erica to witness it, said Mr. L. R. 11. Leaumont (“Sky Pilot”), addressing a meeting in Wanganui last night,’ held to stimulate interest in astronomy. The centre of the bell of totality will pass nearly through San Diego, Chile, where the duration of totality will be 2.4 minutes, and Bahia, San Salvador, on the Atlantic seaboard, where totality will last over 4.2 minutes. The moon will pass between the sun and the earth until totality is lull, and will pass from il. During the time of totality, astronomers will be busy photographing the corona, the wonderful halo of pearly white light surrounding the sun. “This is one of the most beautiful and impressive of celesVal spectacles,’’ said Mr. Beaumont. The total eclipse will not be visible in New Zealand. It is entirely dependant on where the shadow of the moon strikes the earth.
