MAGISTRATE DEPLORES WRONG ATTITUDE TO LIQUOR PROSECUTIONS

The attitude ot many persona charged with breaches of the liquor laws was strongly criticised by Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Qourt, Wanganui yesterday. ''it is so frequent in these cases of licensing prosecutions that the persons concerned or their friends come along and seem lo treat the matter as a kind of.game with the Court,” said the magistrate. If their story was accepted they left feeling quite pleased with themselves, but this was not the proper attitude toward a Court of Justice where nothing but the truth should be told in all these matters. There was nothing clever in this wrong attitude io the Court and it was very small compensation for people to think that they had had a victory over justice, the magistrate added. It was their duty to see that justice was done. Failure to follow this out was striking at the very foundations of justice. “So often have I seen this attitude in persons charged with liquor offences, and also in their friends, but if they have too many friends they are liable to tell different stories," the magistrate said.
