Support for Invercargill interests in their efforts to have direct, shipping facilities restored between Bluff and Wanganui was given by the executive of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting last night. It was reported that a deputation would wait on the Ministers concerned in Wellington on May 15, when a move would be made to have one skip made available each month The Wanganui Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants’ Association was greatly concerned in this question and would join the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce in the deputation aarranged for this month, it was stated. No vessel from Bluff had called at Wangaanui lor many weeks and, in the meantime, cargo tor the Wanganui district was accumulating at. the Southland port. Mr. A. H. McPhail commented that o:i(. Wanganui merchant had 2000 sacks of produce awaiting shipment non; Bluff. Mr. W. S. N. Rennie said that shortage of shipping tonnage was the greatest problem. Vessels were not always available and often had to be diverted from intending routes because of caargoes being more urgently required elsewhere. He believed, however, that the Shipping Controller would view’ the matter sympathetically in representations were made to him regarding direct, shipments from Bluff to Wanganui. The president, and the secretary, Mr. A. R. Donaldson, arc to arrange for the Wanganui Chambers repre ■ sentatfon. on the deputation if necessary.
