SWIMMING CARNIVAL

W. ANDERSON (GONVILLE) CLIPS 440 YD. INT. RECORD The Wanganui Swimming Centre, N.Z.A.S A., staged a special carnival on Saturday night, the main features being the water polo match, Taranaki v, Wanganui, and the inter-house relay for the Woolworths Cup. There was a good attendance and the spectators witnessed good swimming and diving. A feature was the attempt by W. Anderson, Gonville, on the 440yds intermediate record. He was successful in lowering the existing record of 6min 18sec to smin 48 1-5 sec,, a very creditable performance, which proves conclusively that if he had been allowed to swim at the New Zealand championships he would have made history. A novel feature was the water ballet by girls of the Central club, and their movements and actions were well worth seeing. The Centre was very fortunate in having included in their programme of events some members of the Hutt Valley Club, who took part in the bridge-to-bridge race. Three of their members gave an exhibition of the butterfly breaststrokeThis stroke has not been adopted by the New Zealand Swimming Association.

Later in the evening Mr. L. Piper, Petone, gave an exhibition of difficult dives, off the three metre board. The water polo was well contested, and Mr. J. Heald controlled the game. The game right through was very close, Taranaki scored the opening goal after a few minutes play, and Wanganui soon equalised. The second half was more strenuously contested and the ball travelled from one end to another. On two occasions Taranaki shot goals which unfortunately went just outside- Each team scored a try in the second half and the game ended in a draw, the score being two all. This was a true indication of the strength of the teams. It is worthy of note that this fixture will be a permanent affair, and through the generosity of Mr. B. Haworth, a wellknown water polo player and swimmer, a shield will be the trophy competed for annually. The conditions are water polo, relay, and diving.

The following were the teams for the water polo: Taranaki: Goal, N. Goodman; left back, A. 'Pettigrew; right back, D. Weir; half, A- Buist; centre forward, D. Barker; left forward, J. Nodder; right forward, A. S. Robson (captain). Wangaijii: A. Hackshaw; I. Palamountain; K. Harrison; T. Matthews; W- Scott; D. McGregor and A. Kendall. The results for the Woolworths Relay Cup (four ladies) are as follows: — McCaskey’s 1, Post and Telegraph 2, Children s Garments 3. The invitation women’s race was won by Miss C. Lockett from Misses F. Leatham and M. l/ixon. The men’s invitation was won by W. Anderson, from L. Staples, and C. Hodge- This was a very close finish. Hutt Valley and Collegiate were invited to swim in the relay race between Taranaki and Wanganui. The race was exciting right to the finish. Taranaki winning with Wanganui second and Collegiate third.
