LAMENT OF WELLINGTON WATERSIDERS’ BAND

Dear “Sandy” of the “Chronicle": Here’s our memory of the 1947 Brass Bands contest: No more we’ll strut around the street With music, mirth and song For we have met with our defeat We were prostrate at the gong. We went with medals on our chest To win some more we tried But when we found we'd lost the test We all sat down and cried. . Dressed in our uniforms and braid Before we met our fall We thought we were the topmost grade Now we’re no grade at all When that great band began to play We said “We’re no comparison" We wish we hadn’t met that day The Wanganui Garrison. And when we watched them take the stand Our boys began to cuss To see their lovely Silver Band They knew too much for us. It almost cut us to the bone How well he beat the drum How grand he played the baritone And the big U-foni-um. And when the verdict we did hear We gazed around astounded Perhaps we should have raised a cheer But we stood still dumb-founded. Bracefield looked up In dismay And gazed around aghast And in these tender words did say Gorblimey boys! We’re last! We’re well and truly stonkered Through our internal noise To make it worse we're conquered By bands half filled with boys. I think the judging's hooey , And it gives a bloke a pain But we marched round Wanganui Now we’ll march home again. But if they think we're nitty Concoct some tail to tell For when we reach the City Most likely we'll get Helt! Now we won’t cross the Tasman foam To give the girls a treat We think we'd better stay at home Than suffer more defeat. But we can yet our medals don Turn up to practice still So give three cheers for dear old Ron And his cobber Gladstone Hill. “SUNK." Wellington, March 6, 1947. The Wellington Waterslders were champions prior to the Wanganui contest
