WOOD CHOPPING

A. J. HUGHES WINS THREE EVENTS The entries were good for the wood chopping events at the concluding day of the Wanganui Carnival on Saturday, as many as 16 nominated for one class. In all, four separate chops were conducted and the standard of the exhibitions of some of the competitors was of the very highest. The outstanding axeman on the day was A. J. Hughes, of Durie Hill who, for the past 24 years, has been one of the most prominent men in the sport in New Zealand. Of the four events contested. Hughes won three—all the ones in which he entered. The second-class 12in. chop, for which there were nine entries, was won by P. Cameron, Mangamahu, with H. Haitana and W, Warner, both of Raetihi, in the minor places. Of the 16 entries in the 12in. standing chop, the prize for which was £l2, A. J. Hughes outclassed the field. H. Haitana was second and J. Haitana, of Raetihi, Unit'd. Hughes also carried off the £2O 12in. standing event, with J. Haitana and H. Standon, of Wanganui, in second and third places, respectively. There were ten entries for this-event. Hughes, with W. Warner second and H. Sandon third, were the winners of the last event on the programme, the underhand chop.
