LITTLE LIKELIHOOD NOW OF REGULAR TASMAN SERVICE FOR SOME TIME
Wellington, Jan. 21. There is now little likelihood of any regular trans-Tasman passenger service operating until next year. The refit of the Monowai in Australia has been delayed by industrial disputes and is unlikely to be completed before the end of this year, and the return of the Aorangi to the pre-war Sydney-Auckland-Vancouver run after a refit is also indefinite. Although Matson ships may be able to carry some passengers between New Zealand and Australia, neither the Lurline, Mariposa nor Monterey will be ready to resume the San Francisco New Zealand-Australia sendee before the middle of this year. The assistant manager of trie Union Company, Mr. A. N. Leslie, said to-day that individual itinerary ships would be used for Tasman passenger traffic when available until the Monowai and Aorangi were refitted. Mr. F. W. Spite, chairman of the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee, said there is little likelihood of any diversion of British ships to this trade, as had been suggested.
