FIVE MEN FINED FOR BOOKMAKING

(P.A.) Nelson, Jan. 21. Five men who appeared before Mr. Lawry, S.M., on bookmaking charges were fined a total of £230 to-day. All pleaded guilty. They were: John Edmund Pedder, sawmill hand, Motueka. fined £5O; William Kirkland Keir, licensee of the Central Hotel, £5O; William John Bowden, tearoom proprietor, £3O; WilJ Ham Ronald Carey, who was using the bar of the Panama Hotel, £5O; Roy Lodge, who was using the bar of the Provincial Hotel, £5O. The magistrate commented that betting offences on licensed premises were viewed very seriously by licensing committees.
