DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN WELLINGTON JOURNALIST

(P.A.) Wellingon, Jan. 21. The death has occurred of Mr. Reginald Reed Hornblow, chief reporter of the “Evening Post" and lor many years sports editor of that paper. He had been seriously ill following a breakdown in his health at the end of last year.

Mr. Hornblow was born at Greytown. He played in the Wellington boys’ cricket league in days of Clarrie Grimmett, Wiri Baker and Hero McGirl', and when he joined the “Post” in 1910 he soon specialised in sport and his services to cricket in this direction brought liipi honour. Some years ago he was elected vicepresident of the Wellington Cricxet Association. His enthusiasm for sport and his eagerness to give it all possible publicity led to his playing a leading part in the estabbsm-ieiu oi the ‘Sports Post" in 1936. He was sports editor of that paper as well as the “Evening Post" until he was appointed chief reporter of the “Evening Post” last year. A veteran ot the 1914-18 war, Mr. Hornblow was an executive member ol jhe Karori branch ot the R.S.A. virtually since its inception. He was president in 1944-46. He was first adjutant and later headquarters company commander ot the Makara Battalion of the Home Guard in the last war.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Barry. Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, said that Rugby football along with all other sport had suffered a great loss through the death of Mr. Hornblow. Tributes were paid also by other sports bodies.
