MEN AT WELLINGTON TOOK LONG TIME TO DECIDE ACTION
MANY QUESTIONS HAD TO BE ANSWERED (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 20. It took the national officials of the Waterside Workers’ Union most of the afternoon to-day to answer questions, at a stop-work meeting of members of the Wellington branch, at which the National Council’s recommendation for a return to normal hours was put before the men. The Wellington branch had been particularly solid in its support of a non-compromise policy of the union in its dispute with the Government.
A very frank exchange of views developed at to-day’s meeting, and it is understood additional national officials were brought to the meeting to address the members. The meeting was originally expected to last halt an hour, but it extended to nearly three hours
“We had a full and frank discussion,” said the secretary of the Wellington branch (Mr. A. E. Napiev), who is also a member of the National Executive. “After full consideration, the executive recommendation for a return to normal hours was adopted.” In terms of this resolution the men answered the 6 p.m. call for labour on the Wellington wharves. There was a good response.
