FEW BUTCHERS’ SHOPS WILL OPEN IN SYDNEY
Recd. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 5. A survey of butchers’ shops in Sydney reveals that about one in five will open to-morrow and sell meat until the supplies give out.
Officials estimate that those who open, despite the general ban by the butchers, may not obtain sufficient meat to last more than two hours a day.
The Australian Meat Industry Employees Union has declared the closure to be a lockout of employees. It has decided to appeal to the Federal and State Governments against the closure, to apply to the Arbitration Court for variation of the award, to permit claims for monetary loss sustained by locked out members, and to hold a meeting of ail locked out members on Wednesday.
