“CHRONICLE” OFFICE: JOCKEY CLUB ROOMS. BROADWAY. Telephone 2301.

BOWLING RESULTS MARTON BEATEN IN JUNIOR BANNERETTE MATCH The second round of the full-rink competition was played on the Marton Bowling green on Saturday. The green was holding after the recent rain and despite counter attractions there was a good attendance of members. A team representing the club, journeyed to Raetihi to play a challenge match with the Raetihi Bowling Club in the Junior Bannerette competition. The match was won by the holders (Raetihi) by 22 to 14 after a keenly contested game. The Marton Club comprised: Hart, Hunt, Higginson and Lawton (s.). The results of the games in the full-rink competition were as follows: — Thomas, Bannister, Thompson, Bland 20 v. Nicol. R.N. Morgan, Jobberns, Upchurch 15. Nash, Gibson, Saunders, Barton 23 v. C. Hamer, Petrie, Osborne, McKenzie 17. Aitken, Bending, Mildenhall, Ball 27 v. Webb, Freeth, Jack McDonald, Hamer 17. Whale, Head, Robertson, Gibbs 19 v. Scott, Chapman, Laurie, Goebel 18. W. J. Brown, Black, Jas. McDonald, Gorrie, 15 v. Dixon, Charlton Williams, Atkinson 14. A few more players are required for the full rinks Ponsonby draw tournament next Saturday, commencing at 9.30 a.m. Coming events include the third round of the full rinks tournament on November 30; Wanganui club home and away match (full day) on December 14; Bone of Contention match against Wanganui East on December 8. The first round of competition matches closes on December 9. Mr. W. G. Aitken has been elected a new member of the club. MID-WEEK CRICKET. Postponed from last week owing to rain, the cricket match between the Porewa and Wanganui Collegiate School will be played at the county ground, to-morrow, weather permitting. Play will commence at 10.30 a.m. PERSONAL. Mr. W. G. Winchcombe, a former resident of Marlon, but now living at Blockhouse Bay, Auckland, was a visitor to Marton for the week-end renewing old acquaintances. Mr. Geo. Rox, New Zealand manager for Whitehall Productions of London, was in Marton yesterday, arranging for the company’s production of Terence Rattigan’s comedy, "Love In Idleness" at the Civic Theatre on Friday, November 29. LOCAL BOXER BEATEN. As no boxer was willing to be matched against the local pugilist, E. Lyons, only one Marton boxer secured a fight at the Feilding Amateur Boxing Club's tournament on Saturday night. A close contest saw the Marton lad beated by G. Mudford (Rongotea) on a points verdict. This is the fourth occasion op which boxers have refused to meet Lyons. Perhaps better luck will hold when he is scheduled to light in Palmerston North tomorrow night in one of the preliminaries preceding the professional bout. CROQUET CLUB. At the Marton Croquet Club's flag 500 evening last week, the winners were Messrs. C. Hamer, C. Henderson, W. Gow and A. Stantiall and the run-ners-up Mesdames C. Gibbons, K. Price, J. Bending, and Mr. G. Henderson. The competitions were won by Mr. G. Henderson, Mrs. Hart and Mr. Allan Stantiall. DECREASE IN RAILWAY PASSENGERS. For the nine monthly period of this year over 4000 fewer passengers left Marton Junction, compared with the same period in 1945. Probable contributing factors were the abolition of petrol rationing combined with increased road services and curtailed railway services. Up to November 9, 21,100 passengers left the local station compared with 25,298 last year. Nearly 1000 more head of Cattle were transported. This counters reductions in the number of sheep and tonnage of general goods carried, so that total revenue has been scarcely affected, the total to date this year being only £7B below the total for the same period last year. The following figures, with last year's in parentheses, give an idea of Marton rail traffic and revenue:—

Passengers, 21,100 (25,928); season tickets 16 (14); cattle 4664 (3772); sheep 60.057 (79,631); timber 344 tons 1236 tons); goods 5862 tons (6009 tons). Revenue: Passengers £6709 (£6928); season tickets £l3 (£12); parcels £857 (£603); goods £ll,lBB (£11,385); miscellaneous £396 (£13); total £19,163 (£19,241). For the month ending November 9, 1946, the drop in passenger traffic was again noticeable compared with the same month last year, while sheep and goods carried also decreased. There was again an increase, however. in timber and cattle, and total revenue for the month showed a slight increase over last year. In the following figures, comparison with the same period last year may be gained from the figures in parenthesis:— Passengers 2434 ( 2871); cattle 331 (196); sheep 1691 (2441); timber 28 tons (24 tons); goods 601 (629 tons). Revenue: Passengers £715 <£s3B>; parcels £54 (£59); goo* £1062 (£923); miscellaneous £6l. (£3*; total £1893 (£1855>. AMBULANCE NOTES. (By "First Aid.") Vet another year of public service draws to a close, and looking back, the past year’s record has shown an increase with public duties and parades. With the post-war sport, it is anticipated that nex year will see still more duties to attend to, and it is hoped to have more members in all divisions, which will relieve the staffing problem. Parados are practically finished for this year, and secretaries are busy compiling the annual returns. The anual inspection, which is the final parade, will be held in headquarters on Monday, December 2, at 8 p.m. and all members are advised that this is being advertised in the newspapers at a later date. Divisions will be on parade at 7.30 p.m. in full unifofm. The general public is cordially invited to attend the inspection, and it is hoped that as many as possible will endeav-

our to be present, and to see for themselves the work of the Brigade they itave so generously supported during the past 16 years. Following the official inspection and display of teams, the brigade will hold an informal social and dance, but those attending are asked to be in the hall prior to 8 p.m. Arrangements are being made to give a commentary on the display of work by members. Regulation 170 and 171 is quoted for the information of members:—"Leave of absence from the annual inspection, if for sufficient reason, may be granted by the Officer in Charge of the District. and the names should be submitted to the Chief Commissioner for sanction.” "Failure on the part of a member to attend the annual inspection without permission will involve loss of efficiency for one year.” COMING FATNTS.
