FOOD AND DRINK MANUFACTURING A STATIC BUSINESS

The manufacture of food and drink to satisfy the wants of the populace of Wanganui and district is a fairly static business, the number of employees in this type of undertaking increasing by only two during the last six months. In all, there are 576 persons looking after their citizens wants in this direction. These figures are revealed in the recent survey conducted by the National Employment Service, details of the group relating to the manufacture of food and drink being released yesterday. Five vacancies, four for males, exist in the grain mill, bread and biscuit making section. The 26 units engaged were employing 157 males and 76 females at mld-October as against 157 'and 87 respectively six months ago. The demand for cakes and pastrygoods has evidently increased, as there are 19 more persons engaged in these undertakings now than six months ago. Eleven units are engaged, employing between them 17 males and 32 females. At ihe last survey, held in April, only 10 males and 22 females were employed. No further vacancies exist here, the survey reveals. The manufacture of confectionery, ice cream, and other frozen goods is carried on by 26 workers, 15 of them females. At the previous survey nine males and 12 females were employed. A vacancy for one male exists at one of three units engaged in this type of undertaking.

A decrease of six, although a vacancy for one male exists, is shown in the returns of the alcohol and soft drink manufacturers, of whom there are seven. Their combined! staffs now are 60 males and six females, as against 62 and 10 previously-;
