STRIFE GROWS IN INDIA
COMMUNAL SITUATION APPARENTLY WORSE Reed. 8.5 p.m. London, Oet. 30 The “Times” Calcutta correspondent says the communal situation in both Calcutta and Dacca appear to be getting worse daily. Within two hours of the lifting of the curfew in Calcutta yesterday, four were killed and ten injured. Surreptitious knife attacks and fires were started in many places, especially in the slum areas, and by 10 a.m. the fire brigade had extinguished at least 20. In Dacca the number killed since August 20, stood last night at 150 and the number injured runs into four figures. Even railway travellers are unsafe, although the principal
trains carry armed guards. Two days ago one train was stopped and the passengers attacked because hooligans disputed the indentity of four women refugees from Chittagong. The situation in Bihar also appears to be taking a grave turn, and since the disturbances began at Chappa on Friday casualties recorded in hospitals alone number 60 killed and 70 injured. Tension is reported to be spreading to Patna and Gaya, which is a notorious communal storm centre. There is a curfew at both places, and police, reinforcements have also been sent.
