DRINK AND GAMBLING AMONG MAORIS DEPLORED
Drinking and gambling among Maoris were two of the saddest things ho knew of among his people, said a Maori elder, Kihoro to Puawhe (Waihohau), addressing the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand i-n Wanganui yesterday With another Maori elder. Tame te Teira (Urewera) he was introduced by the Rev. J. G. Laughton, director of Maori Missions. Both Maoris arc attending the assembly for the first, time. Kihoro te Puawhe, after his companion had addressed the assembly in M tori, said in English that drink and gambling were the two worst evils known to the .Maori race. “But you can't kill weeds by just cutting the tops off,” the speaker added. “The Maoris are not fully to blame. If you stop the drink, then the Maoris can stop it, too.” The best brains of the country were trying to stop it, but at the same time the best brains of the country were suggesting that public houses were being built with seats and cushions, so that people could drink in comfort'.
