A COLD SNAP

UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS IN CITY YESTERDAY The spell of inclement weather which Wanganui has experienced over the last week, continued yesterday and conditions became most unpleasant. In the early morning the heaviest rain and hail showers which have been experienced in the district for some time—even throughout the winter months—fell in the city and temperatures fell rapidly, reaching a minimum of just over 40deg. Several of these showers fell before 8 a.m., after which the day cleared somewhat until shortly before mid-day when further heavy rain, accompanied by more hail, fell. These conditions continued for the remainder of the day, although brief spells of sunshine were recorded. To add to the unpleasantness of the day, a very strong westerly wind prevailed and was very cold. The conditions at the bar of the Wanganui River were difficult for the coastal vessels arriving and leaving the port. The barometer was at a low level all day and continued to fall slowly. At 4 p.m. the reading was 29.5 inches, At a later hour last night, however, It had risen slightly to 29.571 n., indicating that an improvement can be expected shortly.
