GENERAL NEWS

New Show Classes Proposed. Many classes can be added to the catalogue and the prize money reallocated, considers the general committee of the Wanganui A. and P. Association, which decided at its recent meeting that the stewards in each department of the show should meet and revise the schedule of classes for future shows. The stewards are to attend to this matter as soon as this year’s show has concluded. Their suggestions are to be submitted to the general committee, which will tabulate a report: for approval at the annual meeting to be held in April.

Communion Service Delegates attending the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, which opened in Wanganui on Tuesday night, took part in a Communion service in St. Paul's Church yesterday morning. The service was conducted by the Moderator, the Rt. Rev. H. Davies, and the sermon was preached by the Rev. E. J. Jansen, who has been a missionary in China. Delegates attending the annual conference of the Presbyterian Women’s, Missionary Union also took part in the service. At its conclusion all delegates stood in silence in memory of ministers who had died during the year. Dredge Due Soon

Sometime this morning or else as soon as the weather moderates sufficiently, the Government bucket dredge Maui will put into Wanganui to dredge the silting at the berthages at Castlecliff caused through the break in the South Spit some weeks ago. The Maui sailed from Westport at 230 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, but bad weather has delayed her arrival here. Manned by her normal crew of 12, the Maui is expected to be in Wanganui for several weeks, and if the job is not completed by the time she is recalled endeavours are to be made to secure the hire of the Greymouth Harbour Board dredge.
