NO APPLICATIONS FOR PERMITS TO IMPORT FIJIAN TOMATOES
(P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 29. No applications had been received recently for licences for importations of tomatoes from Fiji, said the Controller of Customs. Mr. D. G. Sawers, when a Suva message on the subject was referred to him. If application were made the department would probably grant a licence provided prompt shipment was assured. In the past New Zealand had taken tomato shipments from Fiji when local supplies and crops from the island dependencies were inadequate. Some Cook Island and local hot-house supplies were available now at fairly high prices. In circumstances as in an off season in the past, Mr. Sawers considered the local market could absorb some Fiji tomatoes without penalising growers in New Zealand and the Cook Islands.
