DEATH OF MR. EDWARD LLOYD IN HIS 83RD YEAR

One of Wanganui's best respected citizens, Mr. Edward Lloyd, JP., of St. John’s Hill, passed away on Monday in his 83rd year. He had been a resident of Wanganui for 27 years following many years in Marton. He was a son of Mr Edward Lloyd, of Trefnanney, in Montgomery, North Wales, and was born in North Wales in July, 1863. The late Mr. Lloyd was a member of a very old Montgomeryshire county family, keenly interested in farming pursuits since the year 1775. Although he came to New Zealand in 1893, he never lost his love for his native land and was always interested in Wales and its fortunes. Mr. Lloyd was in business in Gore, Dannevitke and Marton before retiring to live in Wanganui in 1919. While in Marton he took a very active part in the affairs ot the borough generally, was a popular borough councillor for many yea’s, a steward of the Marton Jockev Club, president of the Marton Chamber of Commerce and of the Marton District Agricultural and Pastoral Association. was associated with the late Messrs. J. A. Bush and F R. H. Brice in the formation of this association and was a life member of this body. Mr. Lloyd was public-spirited tn a degree, a man of generous impulses, and a lover and supporter of a’l kinds of healthy recreation, and one whose personality alway.- attracted friends. He was an active Freemason and held high office in both the Ruapehu Lodge Nn 128 and the Lod<re Wanganui No. 219. Mr. Lloyn was annotated a Justice of the Peace in 1919, was president of the Wanganui Justices’ of the Peace Association, and represented the association at the centennial conference of the New Zealand Justices’ Federation. At the time of his death he was the vice-patron of the association. He was for some years a keen member of Ihe St. John’s Bowling Club and a supnorter of all sporting activities at all times. |St. Chad’s £hurch, St. John’s Hill, ■was taken by Mr. Lloyd, who throughout his life was a lover of his home and all that it meant to him. He leaves a widow, Mrs. May Lloyd, a daughter. Mrs. A. E. Gilbert (Auckland), and four sons, Mr. E. Leighton Lloyd (Mangamaire), Mr. Trevor M. Lloyd (Culver City, California), Mr. Glynne M Lloyd (Dunedin) and Mr Elvvyn M. Lloyd (Kiwitea) to mourn their loss. His death will he regretted by a wide circle of friends in the Wanganui and Rangitikei districts.
