JOINT OWNERSHIP OF HOMES

NO LEGISLATION ON N.Z. STATUTE BOOK MR. HOLLAND REPLIES TO MR. NASH. (P.A.) Hamilton, Oct. 28. One of the largest audiences to attend a political meeting in Hamilton gave Mr. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, a rousing reception when he addressed a meeting in the Theatre Royal to-night. The crowd overflowed the theatre and there were frequent scenes of enthusiasm during Mr. Holland’s address, which chiefly followed the lines of previous speeches Referring to the National Party’s policy of joint ownership of homes, .Mr. Holland said that his party beilieved that anything which strengthens family life and home life adds to the strength and quality of the nation. “Last Tuesday I listened to Mr. Nash broadcast his speech and when referring to my policy address cov- , ering join ownership, he stated: ‘lf he . Is interested, I could show Mr. Holland legislation we introduced in 1943 which provided for the joint ownership that Mr. Holland found out last night.’ ” said Mr. Holland. “To-day I received from Mr. Nash a letter quoting Section.l4 of the Finance Act No. 3. 1943, in reply to my personal question to him after his broadcast. A perusal of this Act and also of Hansard covering the debate on the Bill reveals that there is not. the slightest reference to joint ownership. There is no reference to single ownership, join ownership, or any other kind of onwership. The section quoted by Mr. Nash refers to nothing else but the tenancy of State houses.” Mr. Holland emphasised that the National Party’s scheme refers both

to existing and future homes, whether built privately or by the State, and refers to a definite ownership proposal. It provides for the family home to be registered in the joint names of husband and wife, and ensures that in the event of the death of either the husband or the wife, the home will pass to the surviving partner without payment of gift, death or succession duties.
